Fire commander Neil Maher declared the building safe at 1.30pm, and staff and patients returned to the building. Services are expected to resume about 2pm.
Firefighters were unable to find the cause of the smell, despite searching every level of the building.
They were called to the hospital to investigate the smell of gas on the second floor at 11.55am.
An ACT Emergency Services Agency spokesman said firefighters evacuated the hospital as a precautionary measure.
Between 200 and 300 people left the pathology building, in Building 10.
Three fire pumpers, the hazardous materials unit, the Bronte Skylift Hydraulic Platform and two commanders are on the scene.
More to come.
