A large group of firefighters marched on the ACT parliament on Tuesday morning, bringing with them a litany of complaints about Mr Lane and senior executives within the Emergency Services Agency.

The United Firefighters Union is angry at plans to remove firefighters from the triple-0 call centre, and at an ongoing structural reform program they believe is designed to strip them of resources and power.

The UFU says the service is understaffed, overworked, and under-resourced, and want 100 new firefighters recruited, and a second Bronto aerial platform appliance purchased.

About 150 firefighters, many carrying signs reading "Sack Lane", voted unanimously to carry the no confidence motion on Tuesday morning.

UFU ACT branch secretary Greg McConville said firefighters felt they were being treated with disdain by the ESA leadership, and were left with no choice.

"It's a very, very serious matter," he said.

"We're coming into a fire season. When you are leading an important organisation of emergency service workers, you should enjoy the confidence of each and every one."

But Emergency Services Minister Simon Corbell said the union's claims were misleading, reflected poorly on the UFU, and appeared designed to win more resources during the frenzy of an election period. Mr Corbell expressed his "unequivocal support for the work being undertaken" by the commissioner.

He said the ACT had the second highest number of firefighters per capita in the country, the best response times, had increased funding by 29 per cent, and that the Bronto the ACT does possess has only been used 1.1 per cent of the time over the past five years.

"The claims being made by the UFU are clearly designed to take advantage of the current election environment," Mr Corbell said.

The UFU has launched a pre-election campaign, and is asking each party to pledge to its plan for strengthening ACT Fire and Rescue.

So far, only the Sex Party has signed up to it in full, although the Liberals have agreed to it in part.
