The region has received more than 120 millimetres since showers began on Monday, forcing numerous road closures.

The Kings Highway has also been closed following a second landslip in less than 24 hours.

State Emergency Service spokesman Kevin Anderson said heavy rains were expected to continue around Goulburn throughout Tuesday.

“There’s a likelihood of another 50 millimetres or so in the next few hours,” he said on Tuesday morning.

“We’re preparing an evacuation warning for low-lying parts of Goulburn city. We’re not telling them to evacuate, just telling them to be prepared.”

Low-lying parts along the Wollondilly and Mulwaree Rivers could be affected by any evacuation orders.

Residents at Towrang, north of Goulburn, have also been warned that they may be isolated for a period of time due to closures of low-level crossings.

SES crews have doorknocked homes in Albion St, Avoca St, Derwent St and in other low-lying areas, advising of the threat. Mr Anderson said evacuation warnings had not been issued to Eastgrove residents at this stage, as water was not up to the Park Rd roundabout. However, officials were monitoring the Mulwaree River in that area.

An evacuation centre would be set up if required. An emergency operation centre under SES control had been set up at the Civic Centre. It brought together council, police, ambulance, NSW Fire and Rescue and Rural Fire Service.

Local SES volunteers have responded to about 30 calls for help, but Mr Anderson said the numbers were “starting to ramp up” as rain persisted.

A severe weather warning remains in place for heavy rain and damaging winds and the Bureau of Meteorology is also warning of the potential for flash flooding in some parts of the Southern Tablelands.

NSW Police have closed a number of local roads and are looking to cut off access to Windellama and Range Roads in coming hours.

Flooding and water on roadways have also forced the closure of the following roads:

Mt Baw Baw Road is also closed at the causeway and the recreation area has started to flood. The dressage grounds are now partially submerged.

Gurrundah Road is closed in two locations, at the Kippalaw Bridge and the causeway near the gas line.

Flooding has also forced the closure of Nerriga Road between Braidwood and Nerriga.

The Kings Highway at Clyde Mountain has closed following a landslip just after 1.30pm on Tuesday.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokeswoman said the highway was closed in both directions and drivers were being urged to avoid the area.

The Bay Post is reporting there was an earlier landslip on the Kings Highway on Monday night.

RMS spokeswoman Marnie Procter said it was possible this week’s events would extend the work.

She said any closures needed would be carried out after the school holidays. RMS would advise the community if this occurred.

“Apparently, there was a small slip outside the project area near Pooh Corner about 8pm last night [Monday] which closed one lane for a couple of hours,” Ms Procter said.

“It was removed by Eurobodalla Council. Traffic was able to pass the site during work to remove debris.”

A police spokesman said evacuations were not an issue for the Goulburn region as of 8am.

State Emergency Service volunteers are also reportedly rescuing four cattle that are trapped by a rising river.
