Ms Prideaux and her husband Rob are among a small number of Mr Fluffy homeowners who will miss out on financial support from the ACT government in the form of a rebate on stamp duty.

This is a result of them moving out of Canberra in order to sell their home back to the government under the demolition scheme.

For Ms Prideaux, the upheaval and distress of losing the home she and Rob planned to grow old in, was compounded by the stress of having to accommodate her six dogs in the move.

She breeds and shows her pugs, is an international dog judge and has a keeper's licence. But trying to find a rental which would accommodate the pugs was a task she knew would be close to impossible. Rob's home-based IT business, meanwhile, has all but collapsed due to Mr Fluffy, making it imperative for Ms Prideaux to keep her licence.

The chance that prospective new neighbours might object to her dogs – threatening the business – meant the couple made the decision to buy a small property in Murrumbatemen in NSW.

While they are keen to put the Fluffy debacle behind them, the couple are also waving goodbye to an estimated $29,000 in stamp duty.

The ACT Asbestos Response Taskforce confirmed there was no arrangement for reciprocal stamp duty refunds in NSW even though the NSW government is considering a knock-down and rebuild scheme for its Mr Fluffy-affected homes. It was not considering alternative forms of compensation.

Ms Prideaux said she was aware of a half a dozen other Mr Fluffy owners who were also moving from the ACT as a result of asbestos contamination in their homes. They too would miss out on tens of thousands of dollars as a result.

Rather than "go quietly" Ms Prideaux has agreed to become the public face of a new Mr Fluffy lobby group – the Mr Fluffy Full Disclosure Group – which was formed on Facebook in November and now has more than 300 members. Many of these members are vehemently opposed to the government's buyback and demolition scheme which they see as a land grab which will benefit government coffers and line the pockets of developers at their expense.

The group is calling for a Board of Inquiry into successive governments' handling of Mr Fluffy asbestos, as well as supporting those hardest hit by the proposed buyback and demolition – particularly elderly and disadvantaged residents – and to fight for fairer treatment for residents who want to remain on their land.

Ms Prideaux said the group would be following on from "the outstanding work undertaken by Brianna Heseltine" who founded the Fluffy Owners and Residents' Action Group in May last year.

While there have been tensions between the two groups, Ms Prideaux said Ms Heseltine had worked tirelessly to bring the ACT government to address Mr Fluffy head-on.

"I'm very proud to be a member of both FORAG and Mr Fluffy Homes – Full Disclosure "

But the new group wanted further concessions to allow families to remain on their land and in the suburbs they had chosen to raise their families in.

Ms Prideaux will also lobby for a fairer stamp duty arrangement for those who leave the ACT, arguing the government should refund the stamp duty they paid on any home purchased after 1995 – at the conclusion of the $100 million Commonwealth clean-up which failed to remove all of the deadly fibres from homes.

"Those of us moving interstate are not asking for a handout. We simply want the money which we paid in stamp duty refunded, with fair market interest. The government knew that our houses were contaminated, they knew that they were a health hazard and as such they knew they were 'not fit for purpose' , yet they took stamp duty from us and now refuse to refund it."

Ms Prideaux was seconded to the Bushfire Taskforce Secretariat from her work at Canberra Connect after the 2003 Canberra firestorm. She said the support from the government had not been as proactive for the victims of Mr Fluffy as it was for those affected by the bushfires. "It is almost like we are a nuisance and an afterthought."
