Works to transform the food court on Canberra Centre's lower ground level into a ''contemporary dining area'' began last week, with hoarding erected above in preparation for its demolition.

The demolition work on the food court - between the David Jones and Myer stores - will begin in coming weeks, with construction expected to be completed late this year.
''[The] food court will be significantly remodelled to offer a new dining layout accommodating 14 food outlets, Wi-Fi connectivity and providing seating for up to 840 customers,'' senior centre manager Karen Noad said.
''The refurbishment works will maximise the available space by introducing new flooring, ceilings, lighting, modern fit-outs and a new seating format, which will offer a range of seating options including dedicated private pod seating, designated seating zones and communal tables.''
No announcements have been made about what outlets will open when the refurbishment is complete.
The food court will be closed during the construction period, but Mrs Noad noted customers would still have access to other food outlets in the centre - including in the North Quarter at the cinema end of the centre.
''One of our key priorities will be to minimise the impact of construction on our customers and retailers,'' she said.
''Once complete, the food court's new layout will also provide greater connectivity to the existing Myer and David Jones entrances.''
