Joshua Luke Ferguson, 30, sobbed as Chief Justice Helen Murrell sentenced him to 22 months' jail in the ACT Supreme Court on Monday.
Ferguson will serve five months in full-time custody, with the remainder to be suspended upon the offender signing a two-year good-behaviour order.
Ferguson will be released from custody in January.
Police found 39 videos and 13 images stored on a USB stick and a phone when they raided Ferguson's Canberra home in December 2013.
The court heard Ferguson had sent the explicit material and later shared it with others.
Most of the material fell into the mid-level category of seriousness, but two of the videos fell into the "most heinous" category, which includes bestiality and sadism.
The offender was found to have set up a Skype account to chat with others about child pornography, and logs of those conversations were used in evidence against him.
The history from the account, named "awesomelover", showed Ferguson describing some of the material as "hot" and "cute".
"Shame they aren't younger," he wrote about one.
He also discussed a desire to engage in sex with young boys in real life.
The offender told a September sentencing hearing that he had been disgusted and ashamed as he accessed child pornography and gained no sexual gratification from it.
He claimed he had struggled with his sexuality, been naive about his use of technology, and had accessed the material in a bid to connect with gay men.
Chief Justice Murrell said the chat logs from the Skype account showed Ferguson did gain enjoyment, but accepted it had been a means to make contact with men.
The judge said he was yet to fully confront his underlying issues that led to the offences.
"Until he does so, his ability to identify and address it will be impaired," she said.
Chief Justice Murrell found the offending behaviour had been a continued course of conduct over one year, but his engagement with the material had not been intense.
She found Ferguson had been genuinely remorseful, but also minimised his culpability.
She said the offender had indicated a willingness to undergo treatment.
