The $840,408 payout ordered by the court for Wayne Meredith was the latest judgment in a series of cases involving former government employees who had been misled about their eligibility to join the lucrative Commonwealth Superannuation Scheme.

It coincided with successful judgments for three other former public servants, all seeking compensation following their employment with ACT Forests.

Richard Faulks, from Snedden, Hall and Gallop, described the win as a significant step in recognising the "great injustice" suffered by blue-collar workers who missed out on the scheme.

Mr Faulks said his firm was dealing with hundreds of claims, some of which could result in payouts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each.

"There's a lot of money involved," he said. "Certainly, we are talking millions."

The compensation figure for Mr Meredith is the most significant payout to date, following wins by John Cornwell and Martin Guy, the latter receiving a judgment for $303,582 in July.

The cases have prompted Senator Nick Xenophon to call for the establishment of an independent tribunal to fast-track future claims.

The independent senator was involved in a parliamentary inquiry into the issue and said he would be introducing a private member's bill on the matter in the new year.

He said the establishment of a tribunal was the "smart thing" for the government to do, given the precedents set in the ACT Supreme Court.

''Otherwise the costs of these will get completely out of hand,'' he said.''These people shouldn't have to risk their homes to fight a case when they've got grounds for their grievances.''

Senator Xenophon also described the win by Mr Meredith as significant, particularly for former ABC employees who could be eligible for potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in compensation.

The initial judgment handed down by Justice Richard Refshauge last month said Mr Meredith had begun work with ACT Forests in January 1966, when he was 19.

The father of four claimed he had asked about superannuation five times between 1966 and 1977, but was given incorrect information by senior members of staff, who had told him he was ineligible as he was a ''blue-collar worker''.

He took a voluntary redundancy on August 29, 2001, about 15 years after taking out a superannuation policy with a private insurance company.

As part of its submissions, the Commonwealth stated it was unlikely Mr Meredith would want to join a scheme at the time due to his growing family.

However, Justice Refshauge said he was satisfied Mr Meredith would have been eligible and would have joined a Commonwealth scheme had he been provided with the correct information at the time.

''I have found that Mr Meredith was negligently and culpably misinformed about his eligibility for entry to a Commonwealth superannuation scheme,'' the judgment said.

''As this caused him to refrain from joining such a scheme, thereby suffering loss, the final question is whether he is entitled to damages and the quantity of damages to which he is entitled.''

The matter returned to the ACT Supreme Court on Monday, where Mr Meredith was awarded $840,408 in compensation.

Justice Refshauge also handed down judgments for Raymond Knight, Richard Duffy and William Tobin on Monday, finding that all three were owed compensation for missed superannuation funds.

The compensation figures in those three cases are yet to be finalised.

A judgement on another superannuation compensation case is also expected to be handed down soon.
