It was a sea of star-spangled red white and blue at King O'Malley's pub as the American Australian Association kicked off their annual Independence Day event.

Mississippi belle Lauren Adams said the seasonal chill made taking part in typical traditions a bit tough.

"July is our summer," she said. "So we're usually out on the boat, having a cook out and usually finish the night off with a fireworks show."

The physiotherapist said it was bizarre to wake up on July 4 and immediately run to turn the heater on.

After chowing down on fried chicken and toasting with a few brewskis she and partner Graham Brading had planned to get on the ice at Skate in the City.

Sitting at a long table adorned with stars and stripes Ms Adams said gave her a little taste of home.

"I really appreciate what the association has put on," she said. "I really didnt know how we would celebrate. Being on the other side of the world, it's really great to have connections with other Americans here."

Paul Cheyne and Robert Sroczynski had on impressive patriotic flair while selling Twinkies at association's fundraiser.

Profits raised go toward the association's annual scholarship program which offers a Canberran a $6000 stipend and airfares to the United States to advance in an area of study, research or project that will benefit their career or personal development.

Mr Cheyne said he'd kept himself amused watching as several Australians tried the cream-filled desert for the first time.

"Twinkies are very American but not a lot of Australians have tried them," he said. "It's like their version of Vegemite. It's a must try."

Heat Cheerleading was a welcome addition to Canberra's frosty celebrations.

A group of nine from the 70-strong squad braved the cold and give a taste of all-American entertainment outside on City Walk.

Coach Tan Nguyen said cheer culture was growing in Canberra and attracted athletes aged six to 40 years old.

Thirteen-year-old Georgia Gilliland first became interested in cheer after watching Bring it On, but soon learnt mastering the moves takes a lot of dedication.

"I practice twice a week," she said.

"It's been really cool to come out today and bring a bit of American spirit."
