With his bicycle as his sole form of transport, and a full bin from a garage clean-out, Andrew Jenson used rope to tie the bin's handles to the rack on the back of his bike.

He then towed the bin under his own steam one (mostly flat) kilometre, to the Cooleman Court depot set up by the government in response to garbage truck driver strikes.

"It towed along fine. I had to be careful on corners 'cos it didn't go round quite right.

"I got odd looks from [the guys standing at the gates] when I came wheeling through on my bike, but I just told them, 'You've got to live outside the square.' "

But Mr Jenson said he was worried about how other members of the Weston Creek community were getting their rubbish down to the collection spots, and those who couldn't drive were now a week behind on garbage and a month behind on recycling.

About two-fifths of Canberra suburbs were affected by the strikes on Monday and Tuesday this week, as a stoush between drivers and contractor Suez over severance pay continued.

ACT NOWaste director Michael Trushell said that due to the wide area the industrial action covered, catch up collection services would not be possible.

Instead, residents of affected suburbs would be able to drop off two large garbage bags of household waste for free at both the Mitchell and Mugga Lane Resource Management Centres from Monday to Sunday this week.

Mr Trushell warned more strikes were possible over the next month as industrial action could be taken lawfully until June 8.

Suez's ACT manager Jason Stewart hoped that would not be the case.

"We believe a resolution is achievable with no need for additional industrial action that disrupts essential services to ACT residents and may see waste left in the streets for over a week," he said.
