Three pumpers, the Hazardous Materials Unit, a breathing apparatus van and two commanders were at the North Road site at 2am, investigating the 12.41am alarm.
After venting the gas, ACT Fire & Rescue handed over control to ANU authorities. They have now declared it safe to enter the building.
The gas was believed to be a combination of helium and nitrogen, which was released due to a faulty piece of equipment overheating.
There was no danger of explosion or fire from the leak, although the gas could have potentially rendered people unconscious.
The cause of the fault is still under investigation by the ANU.
