The 2014 Canberra Times Fun Run is fast approaching and the former Canberran has shared some of his training tips to help runners prepare for race day on September 7.

Having grown up in Pearce, Davis knows just how hard it can be to stay motivated on cold winter mornings, but says Canberra is where his love of sport was fostered as a young schoolboy.

"My best memories of Canberra were going to football or sport in winter in the morning, at 8am and there being frost on the oval and it being absolutely freezing," the Greater Western Sydney co-captain said.

Davis says it is key for people to have done some training before the race "otherwise getting out there might be a bit of a challenge".

"I like to do a bit of running the day before. I actually have a bit of a blowout just to get the cobwebs out the day before a game.

"I also try to do a bit of stretching a couple of nights a week for 10 or 15 minutes while I'm watching TV or listening to music.

"If we were three weeks out, for the next two weeks, I'd probably be trying to get some pretty good work in. The week before, I'd try to go for a dress rehearsal and during the week, just a few lighter runs to make sure my body keeps ticking over."

The 23-year-old also advises people to eat well before the 2014 Canberra Times Fun Run, presented by Westpac.

A good breakfast on race day is vital and depending on how seriously runners might be taking it, they could have some carbohydrates the night before.

"I personally think bananas just before the race are great because they're light on your stomach but full of potassium and [have] great energy stocks to keep you going," he said.

And his breakfast of champions?

"I'm actually a Weet-Bix kid so I have a few Weet-Bix and a little bit of porridge as well. I don't mind a bit of porridge," he said.

Although he usually prefers multi-grain bread, Davis says on the day of a big event, he usually has some white bread "to get some high GI food into me" and also tries to have a bit of protein to help with recovery.

Although physical preparation is important, Davis says staying mentally focused on race day is equally as important.

"The best bit is when you think you're really tired. Generally your body's not that tired, so you can keep on going," he said.
