The girl was travelling in a Nissan Pulsar with her father on Southern Cross Drive in Florey when the car collided with a Nissan Navara at the intersection of Chewings Street around 7pm.

The father was not harmed but was taken to Calvary Hospital and is devastated by the loss of his daughter, whose identity is not yet known.

Officer in Charge Traffic Operations, Station Sergeant Susan Ball said the death was "absolutely tragic news" for the immediate family and for the wider ACT community.

"Tragically a young child, a seven-year-old girl, has died as a result of her injuries and as a result of this collision," she said

"This is just tragic news not only for the family but also for the police and ambulance officers who attended and the community as this is a child.

"While any death is tragic, this is a child and there is a school community that will be affected tomorrow as well."

Sergeant Ball said the driver of the Nissan Navara, who was travelling alone, was not injured by the collision but was also traumatised by the crash and the death of the girl.

"As you can understand they are extremely upset and devastated by the events that have occurred tonight, but at this stage it appears that they are not injured," she said.

Paramedics attended the scene and treated the child, before transporting her to the Calvary Hospital.

It is not yet known where the child was seated although police did not believe speed and wet weather were factors in the incident, at this stage.

"It was a side collision or what we would refer to as a T-bone collision," Sergeant Ball said.

"It had been raining, the roads were wet and the road is dark. These are all factors that we will look at."

Sergeant Ball said this was one of the worst jobs police could respond to and the incident had taken a toll on the officers.

"This is the one we do not get paid enough money to do," she said.

"It is a tragic event that has affected many of us and we pass our condolences to the family who have lost their child tonight. Our condolences to the family."

The ACT education department has offered its deepest condolences to those involved in the tragic incident. Counselling and support services have also been organised for girl's family.

"Our thoughts are with the student's family and friends, and the police and emergency services officers involved during this difficult time," a spokesman said.

"In tragic events such as these, all available resources are put in place to support school communities. Counselling services are in place to support staff, students and families."

This is the eighth fatality on ACT roads this year. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
