Glamping, or glamorous camping, is not a new phenomenon, but a surprising number of stylishly appointed camp sites were spotted at Batemans Bay in the past week.

The Barutzki brothers have embraced the campsite-with-the-lot, spending thousands on a cooking and entertainment area built up over more than a decade of summer holidays next to Corrigans Beach.

There is a fridge; an ice-maker; a barbecue; a double-sink with hot water and Christmas lights. And with the flick of a switch Melburnian cabinetmaker Andrew ''Bruzki'' Barutzki reveals the ultimate luxury: a cinema screen almost the height of the tent awning.

''We've had a projector here, but just a tripod one, and you can get these for next to nothing,'' Mr Barutzki said.

All up, the screen, projector and surround cost the brothers about $1000 - and they were not the biggest outlay: the kitchen and entertaining area, covered by two crisp blue marquees, cost $2300.

''This year we had a total revamp,'' Mr Barutzki said. ''We used to have tarps, but there was too much mucking around; too many ropes.''

The communal area gets some heavy use. The brothers' families take between four and five weeks' summer holiday, and were joined this year by five more families, creating what has become dubbed Bruzki's Empire at one end of Batemans Bay Beach Resort.

''New Year's Eve we probably had 30 people all up, with 12 kilos of meat cooking,'' Mr Barutzki said. ''We spend a lot of time here. The weather hasn't been that great this year.''

Gary Barutzki, of Wagga Wagga, said every year the brothers discussed what additions could be made to the luxury camp.

''We mentioned maybe an inflatable spa,'' he said. ''We don't do things by halves.''

The entertainment area complements the three camper trailers, two caravans and two tents - most with annexes - where the families sleep.

Nearby, Canberra's Gainey family has embraced lots of extra comfort, with fridges, a freezer, a barbecue and a coffee machine, ensuring their culinary habits are not disturbed during their break.

Like all the families this reporter spoke to, mother of four Zofia Gainey said she had embraced glamping.

''We did all that camping, from the ground up, and it's just too hard,'' Ms Gainey said.

''I'm not too organic with the camping thing.''

The campers save money by bringing their own gear, of course, but neither were they paying budget prices for their beachfront plots at the five-star resort.

Ensuite powered sites cost $95 a night for two people, and powered sites $80 - plus an extra $9 per night per child - in the premium Boxing Day to January 9 period.

But it still worked out cheaper than paying for accommodation, Ms Gainey said.

''It's expensive holidaying with six, so this is more affordable,'' she said.
