Elderly owners of such homes have been speaking out at community council meetings about feeling rushed into decision-making in light of recent tough talk from the ACT government.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr stepped up pressure on owners "holding back" on the scheme this week.

Weston Creek Community Council chairman Tom Anderson said there was widespread confusion about the options available and concern compulsory acquisition was a looming threat for homeowners who didn't comply with the timeline.

He said rather than words of warning, a compassionate and commonsense approach was needed.

"We need to try and make sure those who are elderly and vulnerable are not pushed and shoved in a direction that they really ought not to be pushed," Mr Anderson said.

Inner South Community Council president Gary Kent said the impact of a one-size-fits-all solution was a hot issue in his area too.

"There are people living in Mr Fluffy homes in their 80s and 90s and I think its counterproductive to force them to leave," he said.

"There is a real danger in applying a general rule and not looking at the cases where the general rule does more harm than good."

Asbestos Response Taskforce head Andrew Kefford said every owner of a Mr Fluffy contaminated home within the scheme had the option to remain in their homes for the medium term - up to five years.

"While people have to at least ask for a valuation to take place before June 30 to stay inside the scheme, it is possible for us to agree what amounts to an extended settlement and that can go out until as far as June 2020," he said.

"Our first advice is go, and go now. But we recognise for some people, particularly the elderly, this isn't a decision they want to make quickly and some do need to stay for a period."

He said owners who elected to remain in their homes, had to comply with a specific and thorough asbestos management plan.

Ccouncils are hoping to bridge any information gaps in their communities by hosting dedicated public forums in conjunction with the Asbestos Response Taskforce.

The Inner South will host an asbestos Mr Fluffy public forum on Thursday, March 5, from 7pm at the Eastlake Football Club in Griffith.

Weston Creek Community Council is planning a similar meeting this month.
