Little did he know at the time but when Josh Dugan posted the photo that ended his time at the Canberra Raiders he was acting like a typical Canberran Instagram user.

The roof top photo of a rugged Dugan nursing a Pineapple Cruiser and flipping the bird could have been considered a scenic, artistic portrait which would fall in line with research released on Thursday into how Australians use the photo sharing social media app.
The Gold Coast and Sydney may enjoy a good “selfie” but Canberrans are more interested in “scenic” and “artistic” Instagram images according to the latest live feed Datafication study.
The study, which began when the site launched in Australia in 2010, was conducted by Sydney-based advertising agency The Works and the University of Technology Sydney's Advanced Analytics Institute.
The results show the most popular Canberran Instagram categories include “scenic, portrait and artistic”, while “selfie” and “food” were the most popular themes from other cities around the country.
According to the statistics, which analysed more than three million geo-tagged images, Canberra is the country’s least “Instagrammed” city with only 410 photos taken in and around the capital in the past four weeks. However, according to The Works owner Douglas Nicol, the low figures could indicate Canberrans indepth knowledge and awareness of security measures.
“Canberra is more in line with Melbourne when it comes to the type of photos they are posting. They are more focused on food, fashion and cultural things. The low levels of ‘selfies’ is a good thing but that could also be because they’re less outdoorsy. Sydney is the place where all the ‘weird sh.t’ comes from,” Mr Nicol told Fairfax Media.
The research showed the average Instagram user lives in either Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane and posts around 10 photos a month.
Peak hours on the site are 8pm on weeknights and 5pm on weekends. Sundays generate the most amount of traffic.
The most popular hashtag is “#instagood” and the most shared brand name is “#australia”.
Instagram has more than 100 million active monthly users worldwide.
More than 40 million photos are posted each day with 8500 likes and 1000 comments made per second.
In April 2012 Facebook acquired the app for $1 billion.
