The claims came as Canberra Greyhound Racing Club members said some Labor MLAs had expressed support for the industry.

Club secretary Debbie Collier said the end of racing in NSW, expected from next June, would make it viable to hold six or seven races in the ACT each week as NSW owners looked for the nearest outlet.

The club upped its weekly races from one to two last month.

Greyhound owner and club member Alan Tutt agreed, saying the Barr government chased interstate visitors for events such as Floriade and would miss an opportunity in shutting down the "cleanskin" ACT owners.

Mr Tutt, who said the ban was what motivated him to stand as an election candidate for the Richard Farmer-backed Canberra Community Voters, said Labor MLA Jayson Hinder had told him on September 17 that ACT Labor would like to have a rethink on the issue.

Mr Hinder rejected this claim on Saturday, saying he had said that the Liberal NSW government were having a rethink and the ACT were "strapped to them", being reliant on the sport's NSW administration.

"While the position we've taken is on the basis of them shutting up shop on June 30, 2017, I can't say we would extend it [if NSW did] – that option would be available I suppose," Mr Hinder said.

"My only concern is that people who watch the dogs generally are our people, Labor people – I don't see it's going to stop them watching the dogs at the TAB."

Greyhound training could continue until 2022 in NSW under draft recommendations being considered by an expert taskforce, it was revealed last week.

RSPCA ACT chief executive Tammy Ven Dange said she was aware of four prohibited drug use incidents involving greyhounds at Canberra races since 2010, suggesting the ACT industry could not claim to be untainted by the major problems found in the NSW McHugh inquiry.

But the Canberra racing club spokesman Kel Watts said there were drug samples conducted at every meeting in Canberra, making four cases in six years an incredibly small number given several thousand dogs raced at Symonston annually.

Ms Collier said former Labor racing minister Joy Burch had told her on September 17 that the club knew she had supported the industry, but would not be voting against her party on the issue.

An ACT Labor spokesman said the party's position had not changed and this was the position of all Labor MLAs and candidates.

"If re-elected we will work closely with the greyhound industry on transition arrangements, including around the re-homing of dogs and retraining of industry employees," he said.

Ms Collier said the club employed four full-time staff and four part-time staff, plus about 20 casuals on race days, with these and about 30 contractor positions to go if the ACT industry was ended.

The Canberra Liberals have said if elected they would hold an inquiry into the ACT greyhound industry before making a decision.
