A security guard was stabbed in the shoulder after he approached two men who were allegedly trying to steal alcohol from a supermarket on Sunday night.
The security guard was taken to Canberra Hospital with minor injuries after he confronted the two men at the Coles supermarket in Chisholm about 9.15 pm.
ACT Policing said the men fled with a quantity of alcohol.
Acting Superintendent Bob Wynn urged individuals in similar situations not to physically confront offenders.
''We take the view that property can be replaced, people can't,' he said.
''It is important that you ensure your own safety first and do as the offender asks.
''Once the offender has left, secure the premises, cordon off the immediate area and call the police''.
The first offender is described as Caucasian in appearance, around 175cm tall, of medium build with short brown hair and wearing a black T-shirt.
The second offender is described as being Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander in appearance, approximately 170cm (5'7'') tall, a skinny to medium build with black hair and a black moustache.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident and is yet to speak with police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.
