The ACT government announced $40,000 in funding for the club’s security on Wednesday, following two burglaries at its Amaroo clubrooms in less than a month.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said the funds would go some way to help replace a $66,000 infrastructure funding grant withdrawn after the Abbott government was elected last year.

The Commonwealth grant was promised under the former Labor government.

Thieves robbed the club in February, stealing soft drinks and water bottles intended for a fund-raising barbecue and badly damaging a roller door.

A local security firm offered the club an alarm system at a discounted rate but thieves hit again in March, before there was a chance to install it.

The second break in saw damage to a sliding-glass door and about $500 worth of merchandise stolen.

The thieves also took a television valued at $1000, on loan from one of the coaches for an information session on healthy eating.

Gungahlin Jets chairman Joe Cortese said he was thrilled with the announcement.

“First of all we are going to finish what we started, because the shed is currently only half finished,” he said.

“Hopefully with any money left over and anything we get from the fundraising, we will extend it. We were going to extend it another three meters for a time keepers’ box and somewhere we could do some match recording.”

Internal walls will be added to the shed and further security measures installed.

“With the club’s own money we built the shell we call the Hanger. There will also be an area for team meetings with players and coaches and a bit of a get together.”

Mr Cortese said the ACT government had shown support for small sporting clubs and AFL in Canberra.

He declined to comment on the thieves who had broken into the club.

“You wouldn’t be able to print it,” he said.

Ms Gallagher said the funding meant the club would be able to focus on its football during the 2014 seasons.

“The Gungahlin Jets is a well respected community group in Canberra’s north with almost 450 people expected to be involved in the 2014 AFL season and the government views this donation of funds an important contribution to a group who help to keep local players active and having fun on the field.”

“I was also disappointed to see politics being played out over this funding and that the Commonwealth government had withdrawn funding which was funded before the last election which would have facilitated expansion of the club shed," she said.
