Hazard reduction burns across the capital

Controlled hazard reduction burns are being conducted across Canberra throughout the weekend.

Teams are managing back burning zones in the northern suburbs of Giralang, Belconnen, two in Bruce, one in Campbell and in the Simpson Hill Reserve in Johnson.

Experienced parks fire managers are conducting the operations with support from trained fire-fighters.

The aim is to remove debris and protect houses and valuable assets including the Australian Institute of Sport athletics field, Canberra Stadium and the Australian Defence Force Academy.

Temporary smoke cover is expected in the area and ACT Parks and Conservation Service have plans to conduct more burns on Sunday.

ACT Emergency Services have issued a warning to people with asthma, chronic respiratory or cardiac diseases to stay indoors while the planned burns are undertaken and steer clear of vigorous exercise throughout the weekend.
