The home at 51 Dominion Circuit was designed in the 1920s by Oakley and Parkes, winners of a nationally advertised competition to design the houses for senior public servants being transferred to Canberra.
Over the years it has been extended and renovated and features high ceilings, big windows and original fireplaces in both the charming formal lounge room and the library.
The grand home features a light-filled central courtyard, gorgeous gardens and an expansive outdoor entertaining terrace.
Luton Properties principal Richard Luton accepted an opening bid on the property of $2 million before bids climbed steadily to reach $2.5 million.
The property was passed in to the highest bidder and the home later sold to one of the other three registered bidders.
Mr Luton said about 60 groups had been through the house during the campaign, which was a very strong number given the high price guide for the home of more than $2 million.
“I think the top end of the market has really picked up,” he said.
Mr Luton said as the home was in a heritage-listed area there were restrictions on what the new owners could do with the property.
He said buyers were out in force on Saturday, with the agency recording more than 10 registered bidders on three different properties.
These included 18 Mulga Street in O’Connor, which sold for $1.13 million through Luton Properties Dickson agent Christine Shaw.
The 15-year-old home is in a cul-de-sac and on a block of more than 1000 square metres and attracted 14 registered bidders.
Features include five bedrooms, three living areas and three bathrooms, timber hardwood floors and fireplace, a private courtyard off the parent’s bedroom, and a separate children’s wing.
The suburb of O’Connor had a second million dollar sale for the day when a large renovated family home sold for $1.011 million on Saturday morning.
The double-brick home at 1 Tate Street has four bedrooms, separate formal and informal living areas, a segregated master bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and en suite, and is on a 918-square-metre block.
McGrath Dickson agent Maree van Arkel said the price guide for the home had been offers of more than $900,000 and they had hoped to hit the million-dollar mark.
She said there were three registered bidders for the property and bidding started strongly, with the house sold quite quickly.
Ms van Arkel said the home was in a lovely position in the suburb and while it was not fully renovated was in very good condition.
She said while things were slowing down for winter, strong numbers of people were still attending open inspections for well-presented homes in good locations.
Canberra continued its Saturday clearance rate of just more than half the homes changing hands.
