Hopes of finding ACT rock fisher fade

February 6, 2012

Hope is fading in the search for a Canberra man who went missing while rock fishing on the NSW South Coast.

The 56-year-old man was fishing on his own, without a lifejacket, at Haycock Point, south of Pambula, yesterday.

Far south coast lifesaving director Andrew Edmunds said surf lifesavers were alerted to the incident by a member of the public.

The man's fishing equipment was found on the rocks at Haycock Point and his vehicle was found at a nearby car park.

A search started at 6.40pm yesterday and ended about two hours later. Additional resources have been called in for today's full-scale search, which will resume from 8am and involve lifesavers from Tathra and Pambula, Marine Rescue NSW, Eden Water Police and the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter.

Mr Edmunds said conditions in the area yesterday were incredibly dangerous, with a rough 2.5m swell.

''[We] hold best possible hope, but the longer the man remains in the water the chances of survival diminish quite rapidly.'' He warned people not to rock fish alone, especially without a lifejacket.
