Brian Gregory Walters, 30, is facing a number of charges over the bizarre assault, with allegations relating to two separate incidents lasting several hours that took place several days apart in early July last year.

Walters was described in the ACT Supreme Court on Wednesday as being the "right hand man" to co-accused Anthony Catanzariti, 22, who is also accused of sexually assaulting the man.

Walters faces charges including unlawful confinement, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and aggravated burglary in relation to the attacks.

The first attack is alleged to have taken place at Mt Majura, while the second allegedly took place several days later at the victim's inner-north flat.

Walters has already spent seven months in the Alexander Maconochie Centre, and his bail application was heard in the ACT Supreme Court on Wednesday morning.

Acting Justice John Nield granted Walters bail to reside at the Canberra Recovery Centre, and undergo drug rehabilitation.

The prosecution opposed bail, raising concerns that Walters may attempt to interfere with witnesses, and that his recent history of drug use did not warrant rehabilitation.

Prosecution argued that his alleged use of "standover tactics" gave rise to fears that he may attempt to interfere with witnesses.

But defence barrister James Lawton argued that Walters had a relatively clean criminal record.

Mr Lawton said the defendant had already been in custody for seven months, had pleaded not guilty to the alleged attacks, and that no trial date had been set for the matter.

He argued there was no evidence whatsoever to suggest Walters would attempt to interfere with witnesses.

Acting Justice Nield agreed, granting bail to Walters under strict conditions including that he stay at the Canberra Recovery Centre and undergo rehabilitation.
