Two Canberra families featured on House Rules when the final three teams in the TV design competition were tasked with renovating a room each, as well as the common areas, of Bezzina House, the St George Community Care Lodge in Kogarah.

The lodge was built opposite the St George Hospital almost 20 years ago through a public appeal. It provides low-cost accommodation for interstate and regional NSW residents who are receiving in-patient or out-patient treatment, such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Their immediate family is also allowed to stay in the units to be close to their loved one during their recovery.

Manager Denise Clancy said patients and their families stayed for a night or for months, depending on their need.

"I've got 15 rooms and they're always full," she said.

The ACT patients use Bezzina House to receive treatment that is not available in Canberra, often with oncologist, Professor David Morris, who is based at the St George Hospital.

Giralang father-of-two Judd Hoyle and his family appeared on the Bezzina House episode of House Rules, getting a first glimpse of the room reveals and giving his opinion as a patient.

He is more than qualified to comment. Mr Hoyle has spent at least 150 nights at Bezzina House as he underwent surgery for his rare cancer, pseudomyoxoma peritonei or PMP. He has undergone 18 procedures since he was diagnosed in 2002, including one operation that went for 22 hours.

The 47-year-old said if it was not for Bezzina House, his family would not have been able to stay with him for long periods of time in Sydney, being close by to help in his recovery.

It also gave him peace of mind knowing his young family was in a safe and secure place nearby while he was in the hospital.

Mr Hoyle, who is medically retired from the public service, was diplomatic when discussing the House Rules makeover. Plenty of people criticised South Australian couple Harry and Kate for placing a taxidermied peacock in one of the bedrooms - over the bed - not ideal for a recovering cancer patient.

"I'm not sure I'd like to wake up with a peacock over my head," Mr Hoyle said, with a laugh.

But he said ultimately the outcome was positive: "They did so much good".

Mr Hoyle said the teams were constrained by the rules they were given and the design imperative of the show.

"There were a few items provided that were not necessarily practical for use in Bezzina House, but the overall improvement to the facilities far outweighed inclusions made to meet the design briefs for the production," he said.

"It was a great experience to be part of the show and have the opportunity to see the rooms finished. We are grateful to everyone for what they have done for the staff and patients who use the facilities."

Also featuring on the House Rules episode was another Canberra man, Tom Wharton, and his daughter who have stayed at Bezzina House while their wife and mother, Jennifer, received treatment for rare peritoneal cancer.

Mrs Wharton, like Mr Hoyle, also had to endure horrendously long surgery that required a significant recovery period.

Mr Wharton, a retired public servant and IT specialist from Curtin, said having Bezzina House had been a godsend for the family.

It was a place they could park their car, have a good night's rest, cook up meals for their loved one and be close and present for their recovery. The NSW and ACT governments also helped eligible patients with a travel allowance.

"It took all the pressure off," he said.

Mr Wharton said his wife, a former doctor's receptionist, had several organs removed to stop the spread of the cancer. He said the care she received had been excellent, the family using Bezzina House for about a total of three months over the last three years.

"We are so grateful," he said.

Mr Wharton was much more direct about the House Rules outcome, which saw WA twins Andrew and Jono eliminated, despite the boys creating what many on social media believed was the most calming and appealing unit.

"The twins should have won," Mr Warton said, with a laugh.

"The boys had a much more pragmatic brief and a much more pragmatic approach."

He also praised the WA brothers for the work they did to enliven the shared kitchen at the lodge.

"They turned it into a very friendly place," he said.

Nevertheless, Mr Wharton, like Mr Hoyle, was incredibly thankful for the House Rules makeover and the contribution of all the teams.

"They were brilliant," he said.

Mr Hoyle, meanwhile, is continuing his treatment and likely to return to Sydney.

"Knowing that Bezzina House is there provides me with some reassurance that we will be able stay close as a family and support each other through the next stage," he said.

And, so, is the peacock still there? We did have to ask Bezzina House manager Denise Clancy.

"Yes," she confirmed, through somewhat gritted teeth, suggesting the overall result had been worth the stuffed bird.
