Having overcome a life-threatening blood infection, which put an end to the then-16-year-old's dreams of a first-class cricket career, he is now passing on the lessons he learnt to young cricketers across Canberra.

With the help of Canberra Hospital staff, friends, family and crucial blood plasma products, and five years of hard work, he has turned what was a beamer into a boundary.

In 2013, three years after his dire hospital admission, he played in the under-21s Australian Indoor Cricket Championship, was selected as part of the national All Stars Team and ultimately, Player of the Series.

At only 21 years old now, Jake has since dedicated his time to mentoring a selection of young ACT cricketers, mostly aged between 11 and 18, as well as to the health sector, as an ambassador for Red Cross Blood Service.

"They said I'd never play cricket again, but I took a couple of years off but ultimately couldn't stay away, but since then I've really only played for fun and indoors," Jake said.

"The infection I got in my hip could flare up if I get hit there or anything, and even twisting and those sorts of motions too much could put me at risk so I spend a lot more time coaching others these days."

His brother Alex, inspired by Jake's example, will this year run the second "Donate for Jake" blood drive next month, expecting up to 60 Canberrans to roll up their sleeves for the cause.

"It's not just coaching but the adversity he's had to overcome, knowing that every time he walks out on the pitch it could be his last game,' Alex said.

"I think that makes him more mature for his years and it's something I think the young players really look for in a coach."

The Floros brothers hope that more people will join their blood drive this year.

"I think it really showed to me the importance of donating, not just blood but also plasma, which is what saved my life," Jake said.

Alex said they also wanted people to join the blood drive who were new donors, as often it's regular donors who give blood.

"They really need anyone's blood and plasma, but often we're seeing those in their late teens and early 20s come along, but we'd like to see people of all ages, and for them to donate again," he said.
