Hundreds of alcohol, drug affected drivers nabbed
The number of alcohol and drug affected drivers on Canberra roads has decreased slightly, but is still concerning for ACT police.
From November to January, police removed 343 drunk drivers from local roads, as well as 10 drivers detected to be under the influence of illicit drugs.
Over the same period in the previous year, 383 drivers were apprehended for drink-driving, and six were under the influence of drugs.
Acting Superintendent Rod Anderson from traffic operations said the figures were disappointing.
“It’s alarming that despite our best efforts, people continue to choose to drink and drive,” he said.
“Our message is simply not getting across, there are some people out there still not getting it.”
The targeted effort was part ACT Policing’s multi-agency road safety strategy.
