A group of residents, called Darwinia Park action group, staged a small protest at the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, urging the government to find a different site, or to have a "genuine" conversation about the site.

It follows the government's planning authority earlier this week approving the proposed 20 single-storey townhouses will be at the corner of Darwinia Terrace, Kathner Street and Percy Crescent in Chapman.

The development has prompted some community concern among Weston Creek residents, particularly related to a lack of services nearby, the community facility-zoned nature of th block and the fact it is in a bushfire-prone area.

The government had reduced the size of the original proposal in response to those concerns, including cutting dwelling numbers from 30 to 20, changing the design from rows of units to duplex townhouses, allowing access only on Darwinia Terrace and ensuring higher bushfire building standards than required.

But action group member Simone Hunter said the development application was approved this week despite more than 60 submissions against it.

She said residents were left wondering if their submissions had even been read, and it seemed that the government was not interested in finding an alternative site.

Ms Hunter said there was a possible alternative site at the former AFP College block near the Coolamon Court shopping complex, while others suggested an area of land recently sold to Defence Housing Australia.

"Surely if they were listening, the government could consider that site, if it's attractive for a private developer near the shops, then surely it's suitable for public housing tenants," she said.

"The current site is simply not suitable for public housing tenants."

Comment was sought from the government.
