The historical Canberra landmark is about to get a makeover with the long overdue and much-touted multi-million restoration the building needs.
Residents living near The Lodge have been delivered a notice informing them that a work schedule starting this month could take until October to complete.
''This work will involve the use of heavy machinery, at various times throughout the business hours, including excavators, quick saws, large trucks and the use of a truck-based crane,'' the notice reads.
''Residents and businesses in the local area may experience an increase in noise, at various times, during these works.'' The notice, delivered to homes and businesses in and around Deakin and Yarralumla, says the construction works will take place on week days between the hours of 7.30am and 5pm.
External and internal structural problems, including a leaky roof, will be fixed up, but the ceremonial entrance to The Lodge will also get a facelift. The notice was issued by the Department of Finance and Deregulation and warns of traffic delays.
Ms Gillard's private residence in suburban Melbourne is also getting some attention, with high walls, security fences and bollards being erected around it.
It is expected the Prime Minister will be spending more time there while The Lodge is being worked on.
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott would like to see Ms Gillard move out of The Lodge permanently and even some inside the Labor caucus are discussing the possibility of removing her from the leadership.
But the Prime Minister had a message for them all yesterday.
''I am absolutely passionate about the big reforms that we've made as a government and we've got more to do,'' she said in Canberra.
''We've got more to do and I personally have got more to do to … that's what drives me on.
''Putting a price on carbon, rolling out the NBN, investing in skills, I'm not going to rest until these reforms are bedded in and ready for the long-term future of our country.
''And I'll certainly be here doing it.''
