Two Indigenous men were badly bashed in their cells at the Alexander Maconochie Centre earlier this month, with both requiring hospitalisation.

A Justice and Community Safety Directorate spokeswoman confirmed the men were assaulted in two separate cells in the north accommodation unit about 11.35am on August 7.
Corrections staff did not witness the assaults, but as soon as they learnt of them they told health staff.
After an assessment, both men were taken to Canberra Hospital.
One was treated and returned to the jail the same day while the other was admitted to hospital and returned the next evening.
The assaults have been referred to ACT Police to investigate.
The man who is still in custody is being protected by Corrective Services.

"ACT Corrective Services is working closely with ACT Policing to assist their investigation, and, as it does with all police investigations, make available CCTV footage and other evidence which relates to the incident," the JACS spokeswoman said.
"ACT Corrective Services also conducts an internal review of the event as part of its continuous improvement arrangements.
"As this matter is currently being investigated by police, it would be inappropriate to make further comment on the circumstances involved."
The ACT government is currently rolling out sweeping changes in the corrections facility based on the Moss Report, a review of the death of Indigenous Alexander Maconochie Centre inmate Steven Freeman.
Mr Freeman was bashed to within an inch of his life a year before his death, caused by aspiration pneumonia due to methadone toxicity.
Former integrity commissioner Philip Moss found the police investigation into his bashing was deficient and his medical treatment left much to be desired.
