Nathan Daniel Booth pleaded guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday to possessing 7 grams of the drug while imprisoned in the AMC.
The court heard the drug was discovered after Booth was visited at the jail by a woman in July last year.
During the visit, Booth placed his jacket around the woman's shoulders.
Booth was required to submit to a security scan after the visit, which included removing the coat.
But the 33-year-old grabbed the clothing from a guard and attempted to run.
The jacket was confiscated after a struggle and a balloon filled with an unknown substance was confiscated.
Police were later given the balloon and testing revealed the contents were cannabis.
Booth refused to speak to police during an interview.
Magistrate Bernadette Boss handed Booth a one month jail sentence, backdated to July 2012, to be served concurrently with his existing sentence.
Dr Boss took into account Booth had lost visiting privileges for six months as a result of the botched smuggling attempt.
She noted Booth had otherwise behaved while in custody.
But the magistrate said deterrence was a strong factor in sentencing for attempts to smuggle contraband into the jail.
Booth will be eligible for parole in March, 2014.
