Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker said Adam Beniamini's demeanour during ACT Magistrate Court proceedings, particularly during the victim's evidence, showed he had limited insight into his crimes.

Ms Walker said this one was of the reasons she believed he had poor prospects of rehabilitation.

"A remarkable transformation would be required," Ms Walker said.

Beniamini, 32, appeared for sentence in the Magistrates Court on Wednesday on charges of property damage and assault in relation to two incidents in May.

The court heard Beniamini had smashed a wine glass, with a piece striking the victim, on May 13.

About a week later, he had been drinking with a friend when he became aggressive towards the woman, calling her a "sl--" and demanding they go to a local club.

She became concerned and tried to call her mother but Beniamini broke her phone.

The victim then agreed to go to the club as she thought she would be safer in a public place.

The court was told the woman gave a security guard her address with the instruction to call the police if she left with Beniamini.

Soon after, he followed her to the smoking area, called her a "sl--", and then picked her up by her hair and flung her to the ground.

She fled to a women's toilet for safety but he entered the bathroom, kicked in the cubicle door, and pulled her, partially undressed, off the toilet by the throat.

Beniamini pleaded not guilty to a number of the charges but was found guilty by Ms Walker at a hearing last week.

Beniamini's defence lawyer said her client accepted he had a problem with alcohol, which had contributed to his offending.

She said he had started a substance abuse program while in custody and wished to enter residential rehabilitation upon release.

Prosecutor Katrina Marson agreed alcohol had been a contributor to the offending but said the primary cause had been Beniamini's attitude towards women.

Ms Marson told the court the victim's right to safety and repeated attempts to protect herself had been ignored by Beniamini because he felt entitled to exert control over her.

"He was undeterred by the fact they were in a public place … so determined was he to get to her and exert that control," Ms Marson said.

"The defendant simply did not care."

On Wednesday, Ms Walker said the offender's demeanour during the hearing had caused her to question his claims of insight into his offences.

The magistrate said the offences displayed significant intimidation, aggression and humiliation.

Ms Walker sentenced Beniamini to 21 months' jail, backdated to take into account time spent in custody, with a non-parole period of 15 months.

He will be eligible for release in September next year.
