Kalonga Chifuntwe, 24, appeared in the ACT Supreme Court on Friday and was sentenced to 26 months imprisonment with a non-parole period of 11 months by Justice Hilary Penfold.

Chifuntwe, who was born in Zambia and migrated to the ACT aged two, pleaded guilty in December to receiving and attempting to receive stolen property, seven counts of money laundering, and possessing the proceeds of crime.

He appeared in court beside his former school mate Corey Coleman, 21, who was sentenced to 44 months jail for 14 charges including fraud, money laundering, receiving stolen property, and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The court heard that over a period of four days in late April 2014, Chifuntwe's bank account received $17,468 believed to be taken from the victim of a home burglary in Calwell.

The court heard Chifuntwe then withdrew cash from his own account and purchased power tools, motorcycle apparel and clothing from retail stores with Coleman.

When Westpac Bank closed the victim's bank account after noticing the irregular transactions, Chifuntwe was able to reopen the account by answering the security questions.

The bank was able to recover more than $10,000 and both Chifuntwe and Coleman, who Justice Penfold considered accomplices, were ordered to repay the remaining sum over a period of years.

Justice Penfold said the ease in which money was transferred from the victims' account would disturb all members of the ACT community. She said the crimes were premeditated and in some cases carefully planned.

Both Chifuntwe and Coleman told the court their actions were influenced by a dependence on drugs with both admitting to using ice in the months before their arrest.

In a separate incident, the court heard Coleman also forged paperwork to receive a Holden GTS Commodore weeks before the vehicle was stolen, although he was not charged with its theft.

According to CCTV footage, parts of the stolen car including its bonnet, lights, bumper and wheels were fitted onto Coleman's Commodore to give the appearance of being a HSV GTS.

The burnt remains of the stolen vehicle were later found by police in Brindabella Forest.

Coleman was also sentenced for stripping and possessing parts of a stolen Yamaha motorbike, although he was not charged for its theft.

The court heard Coleman, who used the alias Chevy Chase, contacted the owner of the bike after it was advertised for sale and discovered its location and when the owner would be overseas.

The Yamaha bike was later found at Coleman's girlfriend's house while his own bike was found fitted with the stolen parts.

Justice Penfold said Coleman had told the court he "felt awful" about the inconvenience caused by his crimes but had needed money to continue his drug use.

While skeptical of the motivation drugs played, Justice Penfold said Coleman had begun to use ice "fairly heavily" in the seven months before he was arrested and needed urgent rehabilitation.

She set parole condition for both men to undertake "a significant period of residential treatment" to address their drug use, with Chifuntwe already on a waiting list.

Coleman's prison sentence was backdated to July 14, 2014 and he will be eligible for parole on October 13.
