Mr Gardner made national headlines in June with an on-air joke about Prime Minister Julia Gillard being ''upskirted'' at a cabinet meeting with a ''penis-cam''.

Mr Gardner, who was also the station's news director, said on Wednesday his sacking early that morning was done without proper cause after an ''altercation'' with station general manager Michael Jones, and that the day's events were ''disappointing beyond the extreme''.

But Mr Jones told The Canberra Times that the announcer's version of events was ''not remotely close'' to what happened at the station's studio. Mr Gardner was also told on Wednesday that he had missed out on the artistic director's role for next years' Canberra Fringe Festival.

The announcer, also in hot water in August for alleging prison guards were smuggling drugs into Canberra's jail, said he had an altercation with Mr Jones.

''2CC and I departed company this morning,'' Mr Gardner said. ''We had a heated discussion about newsroom operations in which he sacked me without proper cause.

''It's an extremely sad day for me, after losing an arts festival that I thought I would be directing next year, to lose my position at 2CC . I don't understand why 2CC management have taken the position that they have and I will be taking further action.''

Mr Jones disputed Mr Gardner's version of events. ''That's not a correct version of events,'' the station manager said. ''I can't comment on what the event was, but that's not anywhere near close.''
