The highway is blocked on the Clyde Mountain, just 400m west of Pooh Bear corner.
The landslide was first reported to NSW Roads and Maritime Services about 1.30pm, and minor rock slips were still occurring up to 4pm.
The Eurobodalla Shire Council has warned the road will be blocked for ‘‘several days’’.
Emergency services are currently on scene, diverting traffic in both directions.
Traffic is being diverted away from the Kings Highway from Braidwood, via Nerriga Road and towards Nowra, according to the NSW Transport Management Centre.
A geotechnician will conduct a full assessment of the landslide tomorrow.
Eurobodalla Shire Council engineering services manager Rob Bourke said the landslide was partly caused by wet weather.
‘‘We’re closing the road tonight, and we’ll be back with geotechnicians to reassess tomorrow,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s completely closed, even if you get to here you can’t get across the road.
‘‘It’s definitely closed overnight, and we’ll have to reassess tomorrow, and make a call as to how we’re going to get rid of this stuff off here safely.’’
B-double trucks are being forced to divert to the Hume Highway or the Snowy Mountains Highway.
Motorists are being warned to stay well away from the area.
