Knives, bat found in speeding driver's car
A man was arrested in Canberra's south last night after being caught by police driving at more than double the speed limit in a car allegedly full of weapons.
Two officers on motorcycles were conducting speed checks on the southbound lanes of Adelaide Avenue about 11.45pm when they clocked a white sedan speeding past at more than 165km/h in an 80 zone.
Police activated emergency lights and followed the vehicle as it accelerated further through the bicycle and bus lanes on Adelaide Avenue, then turned into several suburban streets in Hughes before finally stopping at the intersection of Kent Street and Jensen Street.
Upon pulling the car over, police say they found a replica Glock handgun, two knives and a baseball bat in the vehicle.
The 28-year-old driver, who was on his provisional licence, was arrested and will be summonsed to face court at a later date on traffic, speeding and other charges.
