Canberra Racing Club spokeswoman Briony Young said female attendance had increased over the last three years by almost 30 per cent.

At the recent Black Opal, women actually outnumbered men two to one.

"It's evident that females are the main decision-makers for major race days, they are purchasing the tickets or hospitality packages," she said.

"But it's just clear walking around on race day that there are more women attending and it's creating a really lovely atmosphere."

Thoroughbred Park racing ambassador Phil Bywaters said the simple act of dressing up and heading out to the races was almost like a throwback to old-fashioned times when men and women courted each other.

"Just by doing up a tie or putting on a nice dress can change the mood," he said.

Phil met his now fiancee Lauren O'Hara at Royal Randwick in April, 2013, at what turned out to be Black Caviar's final race.

"I like to say it was the end of one beautiful story and the beginning of another," he said.

The couple will marry in Canberra in November.

Lauren, now the memberships manager at Southern Cross Club Canberra, was working for trainer Jason Coyle at Warwick Farm when she met Phil. She still loves going to the races.

"It's a great excuse to dress up and have a nice day out and meet in a more social environment," she said.

"It's a lot more relaxed than being in a club. You get to know someone over the course of a day without the pressure of being in a nightclub."

The match-making theme continues with racecaller Anthony Manton from Married at First Sight calling the races at Thoroughbred Park on Saturday.

The "A Good Day Out" race day is a fundraiser for Marymead and admission to the course is free.

Fashions on the Field will be judged with prizes including jewellery, makeup and gift cards.

The gates open at noon on Saturday with racing from 12.30pm.
