Owner Alex Whitby captured a joyful moment in time as the three-year-old dog enjoyed a walk with his family near the Queanbeyan River.

Alex, 12, said Hugo was full of energy and loved to frolic among the crunchy brown leaves that covered the walking paths near the lake this time of year.

"We take him for a walk down there pretty regularly. He's always running and I thought he'd look good in a picture."

The image, which was entered in The Canberra Times autumn photo competition, took a few trial runs as Alex got Hugo to stay and then run towards the camera.

Some tweaks of the camera's shutter speed made sure the fast-moving canine wasn't blurred in the final shot.

Stuart Row's stunning photo of Lake Burley Griffin at sunrise also experienced a false start.

The first time the keen snapper, who lives in Weetangera, woke before dawn to capture the scene he was met with grey conditions.

He had more luck the second time, when the golden sun peaked above the horizon and set the skies alight.

Photographer's only have until Sunday, the last day of autumn, to submit photos for this season's competition.

Weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Guy Dixon predicted the first days of winter would bring widespread fog, frosts and sub-zero minimum temperatures to Canberra from Tuesday.
