The tweet referred to federal Labor, and was made in the context of a discussion on public service job cuts.

He was replying to a jibe from former ACT Labor secretary Elias Hallaj, who wrote "Mark & the Liberals will never concede #Canberra always does better under Labor".

Mr Parton, then the breakfast presenter for 2CC, replied: "I do believe you are correct. Canberra always does better under Labor. No argument here."

He then posted a prescient tweet:

"I note that U fave any left leaning tweets of mine. I'm assuming if I was ever back in ring again they'd be back to haunt me."

The tweet did, in fact, come back to haunt Mr Parton this week, during a barrage of Facebook criticism, some of which appears to be from young Labor supporters.

Mr Parton, who is running in Brindabella, told Fairfax Media that he had been "seriously, seriously trolled" by Labor.

"They were all over me on Facebook," he said.

"I can't even remember the context of the conversation that I was having with Elias, I don't even know what we were discussing."

Asked if his opinion had changed, Mr Parton said he couldn't remember the context of the conversation, but noted the federal Liberals were a "different beast" to the local party.

Mr Parton has a significant social media presence, and started a social media marketing business after leaving radio.

Many of his ads for Rolfe Honda, in which he endorses a range of the company's vehicles, continue to appear online.
