Long-term residents have built a life in the dilapidated flats along Northbourne Avenue and now must wait for the letter or call that will tell them when their home will be demolished.

For some it is welcome news that the old buildings they live in will be torn down but for others the decision will rock the world they have become used to.

For long-term resident William Godschalx, the chance to move into a new apartment will be a welcome one.

Mr Godschalx, who has been living in his flat for about nine years, said while he could not wait for the flats to be knocked down, he would like to live in the same area because of the access to services.

''We all live in hope that they won't put a heritage listing on them,'' he said.

He said about 40 per cent of the residents had lived there for a long time.

Mr Godschalx said some residents come and go, like the men assisted by the Canberra Men's Centre to find accommodation following release from prison.

He had also been assisted by this service.

Mr Godschalx said while some tenants would be pleased with the decision, others would be unsettled by the news.

''Change is frightening for a lot of people and a lot of people here have health issues,'' he said.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said those in his complex on Northbourne Avenue were upset at their homes being knocked down.

He is trying to keep away from the news because he finds it upsetting after finally getting himself into a routine after a year in the accommodation.

''My experience of living here is that there are some very fragile people that are living here and it's very disconcerting,'' he said.

He said it was sad because the buildings were part of Canberra's heritage and there must be a way forward without upsetting vulnerable or fearful people who struggle to gain control of their lives.

Residents spoken to by The Canberra Times said they had not been given any news about the proposed redevelopment of their homes.
