Lightning-scarred tree signals more rain in Canberra

Foliage across Canberra received an ample soaking during this week's wet weather. But one tree came out a little worse for wear.

The large street tree outside Peter Conway's home on Elimatta Street, in Braddon, was left with a long split down its trunk after being struck by lightning on Wednesday afternoon.

The resulting scar is a visual reminder of the darker side of the region's thunderstorms, with the ACT SES responding to 26 calls for help on Wednesday evening.

More rain is expected in the capital over the weekend.

Saturday is forecast to reach a muggy 31 degrees with a high chance of afternoon showers and a possible thunderstorm late in the day.

On Sunday it is expected to reach 30 degrees, with possible showers.
