Nineteen wineries brought their range to the city for the mass tasting at the Hotel Realm, although some notable winemakers were missing from the line-up - among them Ken Helm, Tim Kirk (Clonakilla), Nick O'Leary and Nick Spencer (Eden Road).
The event was organised by the Canberra District Wine Industry Association, and included interstate media with dinner on Thursday night at Capital Wines in Gundaroo, and breakfast on Friday at Mount Majura Wines, before further tastings at Lark Hill and Lerida Estate. Fergus McGhie, marketing manager at Mount Majura, says whereas people would usually have to tour the cellar doors for such a comprehensive tasting of local wines, the centenary tasting was a chance to do it all in one spot.
It comes ahead of the Wine, Roses and All That Jazz Festival, which kicks off at the winery cellar doors on the first weekend of November.
And in the week starting November 11, the National Wine Show will begin in Canberra - the culmination of the annual state and capital-city wine shows, with the top wines of those shows coming together for the national judging.
