Police were searching for Robert Lachlan Wickey, 31, after a woman woke to find him standing next to her bed, in the middle of an alleged burglary of her Griffith apartment in the early hours of Monday morning.

The woman chased him out of the apartment, police say, and officers began searching for him in the surrounding area.

Police – who are investigating whether Wickey was responsible for another four break-ins at the same complex on Monday morning – saw the man entering Telopea Park.

After a short chase, Wickey was directed to sit down on the grass, and then to lie face down, the ACT Magistrates Court heard on Monday. But Wickey is then accused of picking up a piece of wood and striking an officer in the face, before standing up and trying to run for it.

The officer was left with cuts above his eye, which required stitches at The Canberra Hospital.

Wickey’s defence lawyer suggested his client had also suffered injuries in the struggle, and

Wickey stood up in court to show those injuries to magistrate Bernadette Boss.

He also said there were issues with the identification of his client in relation to the alleged burglaries.

Prosecutors opposed bail for Wickey, on the grounds he was a flight risk and that there was a likelihood he would reoffend.

His defence lawyer said those risks could be alleviated by a $500 surety, and a direction that he live at a supervised accommodation facility, where he had been living under court order for previous offences. But police said the staff of that facility told them he had not been staying there as directed, and that breach of parole proceedings were being prepared.

Dr Boss denied Wickey bail, citing the risk he would not reappear in court and may reoffend. He will appear in court again next month.
