The way Canberrans use our city's public transport system will now shape the direction of its new governing agency, the Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris says.

Even residents who don't currently use public transport in Canberra are being encouraged to have their say on how they get around to inform how the new Transport Canberra agency will operate.

The survey is intended to shed light on how and why Canberrans walk, cycle, ride and drive around the city to ensure transport planning reflects how people use the services available.

It also asks people what they'd like to see more or less of and their general satisfaction with what's available.

"Understanding the transport needs and priorities for Canberrans is central to our delivery of an integrated transport system," Ms Fitzharris said.

The agency will form a part of the new Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate after the government ditched plans for a stand-alone transport agency.

The new directorate will oversee light rail, ACTION buses, roads, community paths, traffic management and other municipal services including libraries, recycling and waste, graffiti removal, shop upgrades, playgrounds, animal welfare and grass mowing.

The survey's launch comes just days after the ACT Government announced a new ACTION bus timetable, after changes flagged to the weekly timetable last year were scrapped due to not enough buses.
