The blaze began when a 7000-litre LPG tanker hit a 5000-litre domestic gas cylinder this morning at 11.30am, setting it and another cylinder alight at Range Lane off Majura Road at the Majura Field Firing Range.
An ESA spokesman said the fire continues to burn in one of the cylinders in a 'controlled manner', as escaping gas is still feeding the fire.
Earlier in the afternoon, fire crews were monitoring the blaze from the air, using an AFP helicopter to gather live video footage of the fire.
A 200 metre exclusion zone remains in place and the ESA spokesman said crews have eliminated the risk of a major explosion.
No injuries have been reported but the ACT Ambulance Service is on scene as a precaution.
ACT Fire & Rescue will remain on scene through the night.
In a release issued soon after 1pm, the ACT Fire and Rescue said earlier reports falsely stated the tanker had rolled.
