A major upgrade for the Queanbeyan riverfront is now a step closer after councillors approved a modified design for the precinct this week, which will be located opposite Riverside Plaza on the banks of the Queanbeyan River.

The upgrade will form stage two of council's CBD revitalisation program and follows on from a multi-million dollar upgrade to the Crawford Street Lifestyle Precinct in 2012.
Councillors revisited the matter on Wednesday night after previously deferring it to find out what proportion of the project's $4.8 million budget was left over after numerous cosmetic upgrades to the CBD in recent months.
Staff provided a figure of just over $4 million remaining for the Riverside precinct.
Councillor's resolved this week to make a number of modifications to the design and to proceed to tender. The modifications include:
■maintaining the current general alignment of Collett St to achieve project savings;
■the addition of on-street parking in Collett St;
■reviewing the multi-use plaza area fronting Morisset St for improved child safety;
■and the addition of a children's playground and a water playground.
Councillors have also opened up the budget for the project, with councillor Trudy Taylor's successful motion proposing that developer's contributions be tapped into the project if needed. The project is to proceed to tender following the modified design being placed before Councillors at a workshop.
Queanbeyan mayor Tim Overall welcomed the progress on one of his signature CBD projects.
"The Queen Elizabeth Park and riverfront area has so much potential and this development will help bring it to life and provide the community and visitors with another great community facility in Queanbeyan. Linking an activated riverfront to the city centre will also be of significant benefit to CBD businesses," he said.
