Shane Mitchell Walden, 22, appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, choking a person unconscious, common assault and contravening a protection order.
The court heard a year-long relationship between the pair had ended in February and the woman took out a protection order in early April.
The incident allegedly occurred after the pair saw each other at the Groovin' the Moo music festival on Sunday and arranged to meet later.
Walden went to the woman's Bruce home about 11pm and the pair began to argue. It is alleged he pushed her before punching her in the face, which caused the woman's head to hit the bedroom wall.
After sitting on the floor and crying, the woman punched Walden. The court heard he immediately shoved her into a large mirror before pushing her onto the bed and putting her in a headlock.
According to a statement tendered in court, the force of the headlock meant the woman had trouble breathing and she lost vision in both eyes before losing consciousness.
When the woman woke up, Walden allegedly bit her on the nose for 15 seconds and then the right index finger for 10 seconds.
The court heard Walden then left and the woman went to Calvary Hospital, where she met police.
Officers reported seeing a third bite mark on the woman's shoulder but she could not recall it occurring.
Prosecutor Anthony Williamson described the attack as "savage".
But the defence argued Walden had resorted to violence in a desperate attempt to protect himself from the woman, who he claimed was under the influence of drugs.
Magistrate Beth Campbell refused bail and Walden will reappear next month.
