Jayden Charles Mann, 32, appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday on charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and property damage.
He applied for bail before Magistrate Robert Cook, and his lawyer argued Mann had an alternative place to reside and that bail conditions could manage the risk he posed.
But prosecutors opposed his release, arguing he was a risk of reoffending and endangering the complainant.
The offences are alleged to have occurred after Mann accused his partner of stealing money from him late last month, prompting an argument.
It is alleged Mann threw an ashtray at her and hit her with a wooden stick while she lay in bed.
He is accused of punching her arms and legs, and grabbing her by the throat and squeezing.
The court heard he would have clearly known his partner was pregnant as he choked her.
She was allegedly gasping for air and struggling to breathe.
When he let go, police allege he punched her with a closed fist in the face several times.
The attack on the woman continued over a sustained period of time, the court heard, and her injuries backed up her version of events.
The prosecution alleged the defendant would calm down, assault her, then calm down, and assault her again.
Eventually, she sought refuge at a neighbour's house.
The court heard there were concerns about the defendant's anger management issues. If released, it would be at a volatile time, when the relationship had just terminated, and she had made allegations against him which he denied.
While the man was undergoing a forensic procedure, he allegedly told police he would "punch the f--- out of" his ex-partner.
The prosecution argued bail conditions could not adequately manage the risk Mann posed.
There were also fears expressed about Mann's flight risk. He has three convictions for failing to appear in court.
Mr Cook denied Mann bail, and remanded him in custody.
It was his second bail application.
