Officers say a green Hyundai approached police officers conducting random breath tests on Tharwa Drive in Conder at about 12.20am on Thursday night, pulling over and turning off its lights.
But when officers approached, the car allegedly drove over the medium strip to avoid them - triggering a chase along Drakeford Drive.
Police said the pursuit lasted 60 seconds, proceeding through Gordon to the roundabout at the intersection of Tharwa and Drakeford Drive, before the car collided with a speed sign.
About 400 metre further along the road, the car hit a curb and stopped.
The 34-year-old driver from Chisholm was arrested and taken to Tuggeranong Police Station, where he allegedly recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.177.
He has since been released and will appear in ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.
