The man, 54, pleaded not guilty to 16 offences, ranging from acts of indecency to rape, all of which related to the girl.
The court heard the incidents took place during a couple of years after the man began a relationship with the girl's mother and moved into their southern Canberra home in August 2011.
Police arrested him after the girl's mother walked in on the man as he watched pornographic videos on his computer with the girl on his lap, the court heard.
Crown prosecutor Shane Drumgold detailed each of the 16 allegations to the jury in his opening address.
He said the man touched the girl inappropriately several times and had exposed his penis to her.
Another time he allegedly showed her a porn video and said: "I imagine us doing this."
He had also allegedly given her "sensual massages" and tried to have a shower with her, Mr Drumgold said.
The court heard the man had left the girl in the car one day while he went into a sex shop.
He bought a gold vibrator and told the girl he had a present for her, before he showed her how to use it, the Crown alleged.
Mr Drumgold told the jurors they would hear a conversation the girl had with the accused thatshe secretly recorded on her mobile phone.
The girl had hidden her phone and then asked the accused about his behaviour towards her, a transcript of that conversation read out in court showed.
"I love what we are doing, but it's not like I love your mum," he allegedly told her.
He said he didn't act the same way with the victim's older sister because she was "grown up", the court heard.
The man also said the girl should hide the vibrator because he was worried the girl's mother would find it, the court heard.
The girl allegedly replied: "You can keep the vibrator."
Mr Drumgold said the Crown believed the conversation was "extremely strong proof of the sexual relationship between the two at the time".
The girl's mother and older sister will be among witnesses to give evidence during the trial, which is expected to last several days.
The jurors will also be shown a series of taped police interviews with the victim.
The trial continues before Justice Richard Refshauge on Wednesday.
