A Canberra man has been arrested after police allegedly found a rifle and drugs believed to be ice in his ute in southern NSW.

Police said the 38-year-old Amaroo man was driving down Parker Street in Cootamundra about 1.30am on Sunday when he was stopped for a breath test.

His blue Ford Falcon ute was also searched by police, who allegedly found a shortened .22 calibre rifle and a bag containing drugs, thought to be ice.

The man was arrested and charged with a number of offences, including possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority, goods in personal custody suspected being stolen and possess prohibited drug.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Cootamundra Local Court in March.
