A 25-year-old man has been charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of methamphetamine at the Australia Post Office in Canberra City.
Yueng Yuen Lee was apprehended at the Aligna Street post office on Friday, January 15 and taken into custody.
Appearing at the ACT Magistrate's court on Saturday the accused was crying as a Cantonese translator conveyed the seriousness of the charge.
Possessing commercial quantities of border-controlled drugs reasonably suspected of having been unlawfully imported carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
Magistrate Beth Campbell commented on the "seriousness of the charge" and under advisement of Mr Lee's legal aid lawyer, there was no application for bail.
Documents outlining the details of the offence were not tendered in court however the Commonwealth Criminal Code outlines a commercial quantity of the border controlled drug is an amount above 750 grams.
The matter was relisted and is expected to return to court on February 2.
